DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND TRANSFER TO NEGOMBO

Welcome to Sri Lanka, our airport representative will meet, assist and introduce you to your driver-guide for your tour of Sri Lanka. Relax and enjoy the short drive from the Airport to Negombo. An evening at leisure.

DAY 2: NEGOMBO TO ANURADHAPURA AND SIGIRIYA

This morning drive overland approximately 5 hours for the 4th century BC capital, Anuradhapura, and an afternoon tour of the ancient ruins including the gigantic stupas second in size to the pyramids of Egypt, and the Sri Maha Bodhi – said to be the oldest documented tree on earth. Breakfast included.

DAY 3:  VISIT SIGIRIYA

After breakfast drive a few minutes to the base of Sigiriya rock, the 5th century AD rock fortress of King Kasyapa. The view of the surrounding countryside from the summit of the rock is spectacular. The climb is suitable only for the fit and mobile as there are several thousand steps involved in hot and steep conditions. Carry a hat and plenty of water and good walking shoes are essential. Your guide will tell you about the many legends surrounding King Kasyapa and his palace in the sky. For those not climbing, explore the beautiful gardens and ruins around the base of the rock. Return to hotel. Evening at leisure. Breakfast included.

DAY 4    SIGIRIYA TO DAMBULLA AND KANDY

After breakfast check out and leave for a visit to the rock cave temples of Dambulla. The temple complex consists of 5 caves which have been converted to shrines. During an invasion from South India in the 1st century BC, the Sinhalese king Walagambahu took refuge in the caves at Dambulla and through meditation gained the strength to drive the invaders away. As a token of gratitude he declared the caves as a sacred area and built the first cave shrine, since then 4 more caves were converted into shrines and the Rock cave temples of Dambulla is today an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world and a repository of fine Buddhist art. The caves are a 15 minute climb uphill on good steps. Later leave for the highland city of Kandy, en-route visiting a spice garden and batik factory. Breakfast included.

DAY 5: KANDY

After breakfast commence a city tour of Kandy visiting the colorful city market, the upper lake drive, gem museum, and Arts & Crafts Center. Afterwards drive outside the main city to the vast, lush Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, a stunning collection of tropical plants on the banks of the Mahaveli River. Later in the evening the drummers, dancers and fire walkers will entertain you at the famous Kandy Cultural Show and afterwards visit the famous Dalada Maligawa – Kandy’s revered Temple of the Tooth Relic. Breakfast included.

DAY 6: KANDY TO COLOMBO

Depart for Colombo on a 4-5 hour drive and on arrival check in to your hotel. Later proceed on a sightseeing tour of the city. Experience the hustle and bustle of the commercial area of ‘Fort’ and a drive past the noisy bazaar area of ‘Pettah’ or Pitakotuwa as the locals calls it. Places of interest around this area include famous local landmarks, the Khan clock tower, Hindu Kovil, Buddhist temple, and a famous Muslim landmark, the Jumi Ul Alfar Jumma mosque. The tour continues with a visit to the Wolvendaal Dutch Church, built in 1749. then a drive through ‘Cinnamon Gardens’, Colombo’s residential area and the greener part of Colombo and ‘Independence Square’ a monument built at the location where the ceremony marking the end of British rule in Ceylon took place on 4th February 1948. Breakfast included.
